Uncut: The 70 Best Album Sleeves of All Time

It makes sense that UK’s Uncut surveys the “best” album sleeves of all-time, though one might quibble that the advent of the CD ended the era of graphic greatness long before last year. And really? A rock magazine ignores Nirvana’s “Nevermind.”

But never mind, we’re here to look at the jazz covers honored.

None of us is going to argue that three of the six* (two Blue Notes and one Prestige) were designed by the prolific innovator Reid Miles, right? And that the exemplary music contained in the jackets is all right in the pocket for Mosaic fans? I’m a bit surprised that even a pop pub could ignore Jim Flora’s unique jazz illustrations and designs, but the picks cover the waterfront of museum quality photography, novel graphic design, experimental illustration, and  inventive typography.

Proving, of course, that even as the music was losing its commercial standing, jazz continued to pace the cultural forefront.
